Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is designed to develop curious, knowledgeable and confident learners who understand their place within the wider world. Through a rich, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, children build deep knowledge, secure skills and a lifelong love of learning. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to access, understand and critically engage with a broad range of high-quality texts that deepen subject knowledge, broaden vocabulary and develop cultural understanding.

Our curriculum goes beyond the limitations of the National Curriculum whilst fulfilling the aims and content expectations. It is carefully sequenced to ensure that children acquire and retain essential knowledge while making meaningful connections across subjects and real-life contexts. We provide opportunities for children to explore diverse cultures, significant people, local and global issues, and their responsibilities as citizens in an ever-changing world recognising that our pupils need to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of their local environment as well as national, global and digital contexts. 

Alongside the taught curriculum, our hidden curriculum plays a vital role in developing the whole child. We intentionally nurture resilience, collaboration, communication, independence, empathy and respect through everyday experiences. Enrichment opportunities, educational visits, visitors, clubs and wider experiences help to raise aspirations, broaden horizons and enable children to discover and develop their individual interests, passions and talents.

Implementation

Our English curriculum .....

Our maths curriculum ensures that our pupils develop both contextual and procedural understanding, enabling them to engage with maths fluently, supported by reasoning and problem-solving skills. Our spiral curriculum ensures that all content is taught in blocks which develop the children's understanding and skills over time with lots of opportunities to revisit, consolidate and embed.

Our science and wider curriculum is implemented through Cornerstones Maestro, providing a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich framework that ensures progression across all subjects. Learning is planned around clear curriculum goals, with opportunities for children to revisit and build upon prior knowledge, enabling learning to move from short-term understanding to long-term memory.

High-quality reading is woven throughout every subject, with carefully selected texts enriching learning, providing authentic contexts and extending children's vocabulary and comprehension. Pupils are encouraged to research, question, investigate and analyse information from a range of reliable sources, developing critical thinking and disciplinary knowledge.

Children demonstrate their learning through a variety of inclusive approaches that recognise different strengths and learning styles. They present their understanding in multiple ways, including written work, discussion, practical outcomes, artwork, digital media, presentations, performances and collaborative projects. This varied approach enables teachers to assess both knowledge and skills accurately while ensuring every child has equitable opportunities to demonstrate their learning.

Assessment is ongoing and informs future planning through retrieval practice, questioning, observations, low-stakes quizzes and purposeful outcomes, ensuring all pupils are supported and challenged to achieve their potential.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is evident in children who are knowledgeable, articulate and engaged learners with a secure understanding of the wider world. They confidently apply their knowledge across subjects, read with increasing fluency and understanding, think critically and communicate their ideas effectively. Children demonstrate resilience, curiosity and independence while showing respect for others and an appreciation of different perspectives.

Curriculum impact is monitored and reviewed through a programme of quality assurance, including lesson visits, learning walks, book looks, pupil voice, assessment analysis, curriculum reviews and subject leader monitoring. Leaders evaluate the progression of knowledge and skills, the quality of teaching and learning, and the effectiveness of curriculum implementation. Findings are used to refine curriculum design, inform professional development and ensure that all pupils receive a broad, balanced and ambitious education that prepares them successfully for the next stage of learning and life.
