About Pupil Premium funding

Pupil Premium is additional government funding introduced in 2011 to help schools improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. This funding is provided for children who receive Free School Meals, are Looked After or previously Looked After, or are part of Forces families. National research shows that pupils from low‑income households may face extra challenges such as weaker language skills, lower confidence, attendance difficulties, or unsettled home circumstances.

The aim of Pupil Premium is to narrow the attainment gap by ensuring eligible pupils receive targeted support that meets their individual needs. For the 2019 financial year, the grant focuses on two priorities:

• Raising attainment for disadvantaged pupils of all abilities

• Supporting children with parents serving in the armed forces

How we use Pupil Premium funding

At Alderman Payne Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or personal circumstances. Pupil Premium funding plays a vital role in helping us achieve this.

• Targeted academic support We use the funding to provide small‑group teaching, personalised learning programmes, and additional classroom support. These interventions help remove barriers to learning and enable pupils to make strong progress.

• Language and communication development Many disadvantaged pupils benefit from enhanced language‑rich activities, vocabulary support, and early intervention programmes that build confidence and communication skills.

• Pastoral and wellbeing support We place great importance on emotional wellbeing. Pupil Premium helps us offer mentoring, nurture groups, and stability for pupils who may face challenges outside school.

• High expectations for all learners We believe every child can achieve highly. Pupil Premium funding strengthens our commitment to providing opportunities that stretch and support pupils of all abilities.

• Support for Forces families We recognise the unique pressures faced by children with parents in the armed forces. Additional pastoral support helps these pupils feel secure and connected during times of transition or deployment.

Through careful monitoring, thoughtful planning, and a strong focus on wellbeing, Alderman Payne Primary School uses Pupil Premium funding to reduce inequalities, boost confidence, and promote positive outcomes for all disadvantaged pupils.
