Autumn Term

A busy start to the year in Rose Class. The children have settled in well and have been learning all about England.

We found out that our class is named after the English national flower and we created our very own class flag!

We have explored different landmarks from around the country and written poetry about what we would see from our window.

The children enjoyed writing about a day in London and learning about King Charles III. 

In art we admired the land art of Andy Goldsworthy.

We also learned the Beatles song 'Here Comes the Sun'.

In science we investigated the life cycle of a rose and created mini rose books.

A brilliant week was had by all and we look forward to more exciting learning this year. 

This term our history topic is 'Movers & Shakers'. We found out about lots of people who have done something important. This includes Neil Armstrong, Rosa Parks and Joseph Lister. We looked at why they are important and made a timeline to show the order they were born.

In literacy we have just finished writing adventure stories based on the book Lost and Found. We have also been reading the book The Penguin Who Wanted To Find Out and we have found out a lot about emperor penguins.

We also took part in an online event for World Pet Day which was all about animals and how to look after them.

For Fen Week we looked at local human and physical features. We looked at the way the flat landscape allows us to see some beautiful skies and used what we had been learning about mixing primary colours to create sunset silhouette paintings with windmills on the horizon. 

Remarkable recipes.

This term we have been looking at different recipes and sources of foods. We followed the recipe instructions to make Eton Mess, investigated the different tools that we use for cooking, decided if recipes were healthy or if they were suitable for vegetarians, we also practiced our cutting skills when we prepared the vegetables to make vegetable and lentil casserole.

Still life

In art this term we have investigated colours and carried out a colour study where we tried to mix the exact colour from some still life works of art. We also created our own still life art, where we practiced our sketching skills and using watercolour paints. 

Maths

We have been finding out about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and have been sorting them into different categories. 

Literacy

In literacy we have been reading 'The Owl who was afraid of the dark'. We have looked at the features of information texts and used them to create our own fact sheets about owls.

Nativity

The children enjoyed practising and performing our Wriggly Nativity alongside Thistle Class this term. We are so proud of the children for learning all the songs, working together and performing fantastically to 3 different audiences!

Spring Term

Numbers Day

On 7th February we took part in NSPCC Numbers Day. We had lots of different math activities to choose from.

Literacy

In literacy we read ‘The Dragon Machine’. We wrote letters to Mrs Mulford telling her about the pesky dragons that had invaded our classroom and stories based on our own machine ideas. We also read ‘The Case of the Missing Mammoth’. We investigated extinct animals and wrote stories about extinct creatures that go missing. We used past tense and some fantastic descriptive vocabulary. We also learned and performed some sea shanties.

Beach Huts

In Design & technology this half term we have been working with wood and have design and made beach huts. We investigated how to strengthen and reinforce joints. We used junior hacksaws to cut wood, made a frame for a beach hut using butt joints and worked as a team to create the walls and apex roof.

True’s Yard

As part of our Coastline topic we had a great day out at True’s Yard, a fisherfolk museum in King’s Lynn. The children behaved fantastically. We handled some historical objects from maritime history, saw some of the oldest cottages in Kings Lynn, as well as a smokehouse and smithy and saw a statue of Captain George Vancouver.
 

Spring exhibition

Rose Class produced some fantastic home learning this term based on our Coastline topic. At the end of term we had an exhibition to show our families.

Art

In art we investigated shape, form and texture of flowers. We drew and made flowers out of paper and clay. We also looked at existing artists who base their work on flowers like Vincent Van Gogh and Yayoi Kusama.

Science

In science we investigated different uses of materials and their properties. We also explored how seeds grow into plants and tracked the germination of cress seeds. We planted different seeds and bulbs in a propagator and are looking after them to see how they continue to grow.
