Spring Term
In the Spring Term our topic is 'Bright lights, big city'. We will learn about the physical and human characteristics of the United Kingdom, with a focus on London. Our science topic will be about seasonal changes and we will be measuring weather. In design and technology we will explore mechanisms and movement in a project called Taxi. Our literacy unit will focus on character description and creating a fictional story. We will read the books Grandpa's Gift by Fiona Lumbers and The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. Our math topics will include place value to 100, addition and subtraction and statistics.
Making vehicle protoypes.
In design and technology the children investigated wheels, axles and chassis by creating protoype models. Some children chose to use fixed axles and others chose to use fixed wheels. They tried their vehicles when they were made, to see if they moved and how well they moved. The children found that the fixed wheel prototypes were more stable and moved better.
Measuring weather.
The children became meteorologists this term, using our weather station to measure the weather over a period of time. It has a thermometer which they used to measure temperature in degrees celsius and a rain gauge which they used to find out how many mm of rainfall there had been each day. The children used their observational skills to decide on the weather type and the level of wind. They looked at a windsock to see the effects of the wind and looked at where it was on the Beaufort Scale. We recorded the results on our Science wall.
Yoga
In PE the children explored mindfulness through practicing yoga flows with animal poses alongside square breathing techniques.
Brinkley the dog.
Brinkley the therapy dog has been visiting weekly and the children have enjoyed spending time with him. They liked smoothing and brushing Brinkley as well as reading to him.
Autumn Term
In the Autumn term our Topic is 'Childhood'. We will be looking at historical artefacts and finding out more about what it is like to be a child at different times in history. In art we will be experimenting with colour mixing and in design technology we will be designing and creating shelters. In science we will be exploring everyday materials which will help us with our shelter designs and we will develop our understanding of natural and human-made materials. We will also be swimming and dancing our way through the first half term in PE.
Den building.
The children had a brilliant afternoon building dens as part of our design and technology unit. They showed fantastic creative problem solving skills and worked as teams.
1950's experience afternoon.
As part of our history topic the children had an afternoon trying out 1950's activities. They listened to some music and learned how to dance like Elvis! They tried out some games such as jacks, snakes and ladders and hopscotch and also tried playing with a cup and ball and some spinning tops. The children then used their experience to inform some of their writing.
WOW Science.
The children donned their lab coats and discovered how to make play dough as part of our investigation into everyday materials. The children discussed the properties of the different ingredients and talked about what happened when the ingredients were all mixed together. They even discovered that when you mix 2 primary colour food dyes into the mix the dough turns a secondary colour, just like when we investigated colour mixing with paints in art! When the dough was made the children enjoyed manipulating it and being creative.
Fen Week
As part of Fen Week, the children learned about a local man called Thomas Clarkson who campaigned to abolish slavery. They drew pictures of Thomas Clarkson and his memorial statue, which stands in Wisbech. We also created pictures of Windmills, which are a human feature of the Fens.
